THE TRIPPER

Travelling ¼ of the world
overland
across continents
by bus, by car, by rail, by foot
via villages
and cities
thru cultivated turf
and barren terrain, I
wandered
from one culture
to another.

And everywhere, I saw people, doing what
the world does over
eating, sleeping, shitting,
working
laughing
loving.

Geography creates variety
but over the continents
across this world
we are the same.

Our world seems so large from
an atlas of
fractured colored-coded states
but also small
from a lunar perspective – (ask the spacemen)
a border-less blur of green and blue.

Individuals insignificant within galaxies
our brief seconds called life
appreciate
communicate
understand that
we live together
but not forever …

That across the world
me
you
we – are one.

Written after travelling Eur-Asia overland, from England to India (via Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan during August & September  1990).
