Niger River – Mopti to Timbuktu – Mali
Down the Niger River – Mopti to Timbuktu -Mali
3 days down the Niger River, thru the Sahara & Sahel, traveling from Mopti to Timbuktu, by motorized pirogue. Camping on the desert shores, passing mud-sculptured villages with their elaborate mosques, stopping on river islands – to be swarmed by curious villagers …

Very inspiring indeed! I will spend a week in Bamako for business in August and am contemplating staying the weekend to have a look around other parts of the country (would love to see Timbuktu!!)I am however a bit concerned about the various warnings put out by the foreign office and similar organisations; French people losing their heads via help of Al-Qaeda etc; Do you think is safe to go?
Hi Weliam. Greetings from Cambodia. I was there in Mali in 2007 and the situation has since changed in respect to security. Bamako is great – check out the live music scene. But it’s a big distance over rough terrain to Timbuktu and you will need much more time … (better to fly). Once in the town, it will be safe, it’s only on route – overland, that there could be some security issues. Hope you get there – amazing place. Regards – Michael
