What can I say. It’s a lovely old town beside a beautiful lake. Just don’t go in summer – unless you’re with kids and / or your lover. Simply, it’s a pretty place for a perfect holiday. And during a sizzling Balkan summer, much of (land-locked) Macedonia is half-naked, beach-bound at this iconic lake.
A local told me that “Ohrid is the Second Jerusalem”, and sure it was an important Christian site for centuries, with many wonderful churches still evident. However I’ve heard this mighty claim before (from my visits to Lalibela, an amazing Ethiopian site of many Medieval rock-hewn churches that is arguably more worthy of the title).
Ohrid is also famous as one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe.
Albania also shares its shores, and within days I would be zipping around these shimmering waters, crossing a remote border into my next destination.
