Rostav Veliky – Russia

Rostav Veliky – Russia

Rostav-Veliky forms part of the historic Golden Ring of towns outside of Moscow where early Russian Statehood begun around 900 AD.

A very quiet town, today.

Massive white-walled fort (Kremlin) with towers, and inside church onion domes stand beside the marshy, Lake Nero.

I stayed in the 17th century inn, within the walls for two nights. One evening drinking red wine by the lakeside and the next  afternoon beside the inner pond – domed dusk reflections in the waters, crows and other birds yakking away above me, flying from dome to dome, and a local cat hungry for my salami and cheese.

A classic postcard town of old Russia – unscathed by tourism, for the moment. Close to time traveling. Pure Pleasure.

Stalingrad Memorial – Volgagrad, Russia

Stalingrad Memorial – Volgagrad, Russia

Stalingrad (since renamed Volgagrad) is famous as the city of the most colossal, brutal, landmark battle of the Second World War.

The museum was what you would expect – weaponry, vehicles, uniforms, gripping 360 degree panoramas of the battle as seen from Hill 101, chunks of devastation, including ‘the Mill’ a ruined brick building left as is as a monument  (to the 147 days of house to house combat and truly shocking brutality) which left about 1,200,000 dead on both sides (another 180,000 German prisoners as the 6th Army surrendered (mostly to die later in Siberian camps).

Today, numerous statues line vital battle sites, headquarters, shifting front lines, etc across this modern, tranquil city alongside the massive Volga River, where ’standing’ sunbathers gather on the sandy shores.

The highlight was Hill 101 where stands this massive Mother Russia statue (with raised sword and savage outcry, short sweeping hair, long dress and big breasts – defying any enemies from the west).

She stands about 70 meters in total on top of the hill that saw all over the city battlefields and hence was a place of real conflict. But the whole walkway avenue is a park of monuments and audio recordings of dive bombers and battle sounds as you walk thru walls of recreated ’sculptured’ ruins and ponds and an eternal flame tomb of a massive somber dome playing constant classical – tear jerking -soft wailing – with guards and wreathes and countless names.

I took a brunch of flowers bought from old ladies at the foot of the park and placed it here as the changing of the guard took place.

Meantime the weather over the space of two hours flipped between very hot, cold winds, and rain storms; the water weeping down the statue’s face as the sun shone …

Tobolsk – Siberia, Russia

Tobolsk – Siberia, Russia

Am now in a remote – 6 hours by bus off the Trans-Siberian railway route in Tobolsk.

It was once a Tatar (Mongol-descended) stronghold taken by the Cossacks in the 16th century and fortified on a cliff top where two great rivers meet. Back then it – the Cossacks here – were renowned for wife-swapping, incest, and wife-stealing – so here the first Bishopric was set up in Siberia (although the population was solely Muslim) to stop such Cossack activity.

I’m here visiting this amazing Kremlin (fort) and  monastery, the gold-onion-domed church offering  a commanding view over the old town of Tobolsk, below the cliffs, beside wide rivers and the setting sun …

Drugged, abducted, robbed in Russia

Drugged, abducted, robbed in Russia

Everyone around the tables was friendly. I remember having 3 shots with them and that’s it … until I remember stumbling and falling from weakness on gravel somewhere in the countryside amid early morning sunlight. Didn’t know where the fuck I was but it certainly wasn’t in the city. It dawned on me that I had been drugged, robbed, abducted and ditched on a road in the countryside.
